A cylinder is the part of the lock your key goes into, and it is the part a burglar attacks first. Replacing it is cheap compared with replacing a door, which is why it is the upgrade we recommend most often.
Cylinders sold in the Czech Republic are rated by security class. The higher the class, the longer the cylinder resists drilling, picking and snapping. For a ground-floor flat or a family house, it is worth going one class above the minimum.
Snapping is the fastest way into a weak cylinder: the attacker breaks it in two and turns the mechanism directly. A cylinder with a designed break line, fitted behind a security plate, defeats this in most cases.
A patented key profile cannot be copied at a kiosk. Copies are issued only against a card held by the owner — which matters far more than most people realise when tenants, cleaners and builders have all held a key at some point.
For a standard Prague apartment door we normally suggest a certified cylinder with drill and snap protection, combined with a security plate. Call us with the make of your door and we will tell you what fits.
